About Artist Jen Lester
American expressionist painter, Jen Lester
"A dance, an intimate conversation happens between me and the paint, shapes and medium I am working with, until it is time to part ways, having said all that needs to be said."
"My Art invites viewers to create their own narrative and have their own discoveries, just as I did when I created the art."
- Jen Lester
A love of Nature, fierce independence and a thirst for adventure and exploration has always driven Artist Jen Lester. A need to express creatively also has been a constant in the artist's life.
What makes Jen Lester's work so intriguing is it's unique nature, independent and not derivative in the slightest. There's no attempt to belong to an artistic genre, or emulate anyone or anything other than her own inner guide. She is an artist creating fearlessly, and with a passion. These qualities have collectors flocking to her work, eager to own originals and que for commissions.
Her vibrant and distinctive paintings are characterized by her confident, bold brushwork, fearless use of color, and strong but sensitive, intuitive compositions.
She explains her painting practice as a journey of discovery, much like her adventures in the wilderness.
Creating authentically and honestly, as she says is something very important to her. The artist seeks to distill the experiences and mood of places she has experienced into raw, pure expressions. The painting an act of meditation of sorts, which is recorded.
The Artist explains there is a more subtle, yet direct symbolism to working as an expressionist. "It invites the viewer to engage more with the work because everything isn't so obvious. It allows them to create their own narrative and have their own discoveries, just as I did when I created the art."
The majority of her art is drawn from her own internal world.
Jen Lester is a process driven artist, the act of painting, creating, is her passion and what drives her.
"The physical paintings are just trapped moments in time, a record of something magical and intangible that can only be felt. I think people respond to truth, and direct raw energy, and I find this is what draws viewers into my work. I believe art is the highest form of communication we have to offer each other.
So through art we can communicate with each other regardless of spoken language because it goes deeper and beyond those limitations.
Some shapes and colors seem almost archetypal, they are illuminating the intangibles of life, like guideposts to some unknown mystery.
"A dance, an intimate conversation happens between me and the paint, shapes and medium I am working with, until it is time to part ways, having said all that needs to be said."
Jen Lester has exhibited extensively since 1999, and in 2003 participated in a group show in Williamsburg, Brooklyn NYC showcasing the Art of the fantastique and visionary. Also exhibited at the show was famed artist HR Giger, which the artist states was a great honor to hold space with. The exhibit although a group show had extensive press, including MTV and HBO and marks the launch of her professional career.
Jen Lester's Artwork is in private and commercial collections in the U.S. and Internationally.

Meet the Artist
Art gives people permission to pause, dream for a moment and escape into their own world. Art gives people not only inspiration, but hope. Art is food for the soul.
Hello, I'm Jen Lester, a professional artist living and working in the United States.
Creating art is my life. I have devoted myself to it. I started creating as a child, and never really stopped.
My life as an artist is a journey- an ever evolving one. For more than 20 years I have dedicated myself to my art making practice. My Artwork was quite different when I was younger, and has evolved more and more towards expressionism and abstraction currently. Always curious, learning, studying, practicing and working, pushing myself to do more, be braver, bolder. My creative journey has been one of discovery, exploration, and mastering techniques and materials that allows me to create authentically.
I create physical paintings on canvas, paper or wood- wall sculptures in hydro stone plaster, wood and industrial materials.
I've tried to share here the most common things I am asked about. I hope it gives you insight into my art and process.
Inspirations:
It's not easy to explain inspiration, or a single thing that inspires everything. I don't think it's possible.
Although most of my work is purely from my imagination, occasionally I will create works based on National parks or other locations I find interesting or have visited.(and sometimes objects from nature such as leaves or rocks )
I'm a little obsessed with textures and surfaces. I love how concrete and stone looks and feels. I love contrasts between materials.
It's very obvious that I am interested in the sky, clouds and weather. I always have been. It's true, it's one of the main subjects of my current work.
The sky is something universal all people can understand, no language barriers.
The sky can evoke a range of emotions and moods. It's a wonderful muse and subject matter.
I'm most influenced by the mood or feeling a place or time gives me. it could be a stormy sky over a highway on a trip, with the lights twinkling in the dusky atmosphere, or, a completely isolated camping spot with no other humans around, or the way water and rocks look in a river or lake.
How we leave our mark on the natural world- and how it leaves it's mark on us- is something underneath my work.
As a painter inspired by Nature and wilderness, I'm very fortunate to live near a state park and also a wildlife preserve! Quartz mountain state park and the Wichita mountains wildlife refuge.
Within a few hours drive, we also have other incredible parks nearby. We live on the edge of where the prairies end and desert begins, with big skies and crazy weather each year. Lots of storm chasers are in our region all the time. It all comes together for really unique inspiration!
There are other things that inspire me and stimulate my creativity such as design, architecture, and other artist's mediums such as glass, ceramics and textiles. I enjoy seeing art and design from others almost as much as making my own. The places I have lived and cultures I have experienced also inspire my work.
In particular, Japanese and Scandinavian design.

Background
Although originally from Norfolk, Virginia I've lived 'out west' since I was about 12, so the Western U.S. is home to me.
I love the desert and mountains and high desert landscapes. I live in Oklahoma, and have lived in several other western U.S states, as well as many other countries including Australia, Morocco and Greece. We frequently travel to Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Nevada. The experiences from my travels and environment have an influence on my Art making. Every place I have lived or visited gives me inspiration.
Hobbies & Personal life:
I've always had a strong interest in science and the natural world, and how I spend my time reflects that.
I enjoy overlanding, and primitive camping out on public lands and national forests with my partner of 10 yrs, Dan. Each time is magical. Exploring the landscape and discovering new beautiful places is my favorite thing to do, besides painting.
I'm also an off road cyclist and mountain bike rider.
Although I haven't gone on any full fledged Bike packing excursions, or bike touring yet, it's something I'm looking forward to as soon as I can.
I have several cats, although most of my life I was a 'dog person.' I love animals. I'm a bit of an environmentalist, and feel strongly about protecting our environment, wilderness, oceans and animals for future generations.

Process
How my paintings come to life
How I create is always evolving, in an attempt to create as authentically and honestly as possible. I am a process driven painter, and my art is about discovery and expression.
I create physical paintings, on paper, wood or canvas.
I'm an Acrylic painter. Although for most of my career I was an oil painter. I often use my acrylics the same as I did with oils.
This is how many my paintings start. (as shown in the photo) I don't draw or sketch, I create a kind of an under-painting. Beginning with a canvas or panel that is painted a solid color, I then use transparent burnt sienna or violet, and spread the paint around with my hands, it's very intimate, direct, primal. Connecting my subconscious to the physical. I then scrape or wipe away areas. Sometimes with my hands, sometimes with a paper towel, sometimes a brush. It's very spontaneous and full of energy. I must work quickly, because acrylics dry fast and are unforgiving the way oils are.
This stage is very important. I let it unfold, reveal itself. I come back to the painting and find the landscape and clouds in the event that just happened on the canvas. How much or how little I cover with paint happens at this stage.
At this point, the work can often become very meditative. In a way, it's calm from chaos- a lot like the storm clouds I paint.
When I start a painting, there is discovery in how the paint will express itself. For me a lot of the joy is in the spontaneity of putting down the paint and responding to it. I'm capturing and creating a mood, and a new reality.
Some of my paintings are semi-abstract and look like clouds, and Imaginary landscapes- some of my work is purely abstract. Usually there's a little of both or merging of the two.

The Commission Process
A Custom Painting can set the mood for a whole room. Some clients even design their space based on the Art. If you've yet to have a custom Artwork created for you, it's easy and fun, I'll explain the process so we can begin our collaboration
The first step is to contact me via e mail.
Next, I'll send you a questionnaire that asks basic questions, for example the size of painting you need, the size and space of the room the art will be in, If you'd like the painting you are hiring me to create to be similar to one you've seen on the website, et.
After you've answered the basic questions, a deposit of half the price of the painting is made. ( Current pricing for commissions will be sent along with the questionnaire)
After your deposit is made, we can move on to designing your custom artwork. Now comes the Fun part! I consider commissions to be Collaborations. I really try to get as much insight from you as possible in the creation of your Artwork, to make it truly yours, and special. My goal is for you to be thrilled with your new painting, and have something that will bring you joy for years to come!
Maybe you're working with a designer, or are building a new home and have swatches for wall colors, or fabrics you'd like to coordinate with. You can share those with me to help create a piece you'll love. Your favorite colors, and any photos or mood boards you have also help me get a sense of what will be perfect for you.
After we've exchanged all the info, and I have your input and desired colors and subject, I'll begin. At this point, I can send you process photos. Revisions within reason can be made at this point, and I'll do my absolute best to adjust anything you need.
After your painting is finished, I'll notify you and send final photos for your approval. Final payment is made at this point, and I carefully package and ship your new Art to you!
I love to see photos of my art in client's spaces, so feel free to take photos after your art is installed.
I may share your photos to social media if you approve.
And that's it! You and your Art live happily ever after.
I hope this answers any questions you might have, and hope to create something beautiful for you one day.
